Correspondence and other papers of Putnam from his earliest childhood in Cornish, New Hampshire, through his death at Fort Wagner South Carolina. Haldimand Sumner Putnam was born in Cornish, New Hampshire, in 1836, son of John Lyscom Putnam and Adeline Sumner Putnam. He graduated as a member of the Class of 1857 from the United States Military Academy at West Point and was appointed Brevet Second Lieutenant in the Topographical Engineers that year. After service as an engineer in Utah, Putnam returned to New Hampshire where he helped raise and muster the Seventh New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry. Appointed Colonel of the regiment at its muster in 1861, Putnam led the unit through the early stages of the Civil War seeing much action during the campaigns in South Carolina to capture Charleston. Putnam was mortally wounded on July 18, 1863, during an attack on Fort Wagner, South Carolina.
